During my junior and senior years of Lake Braddock Secondary School, I organized the creation of a triptych mural to be dedicated to our newly renovated library. Tapping into the school's art club -- a crew of rag-tag misfits and artists -- we spent the better part of our spring and summer painting something that prominently featured a fetus. We were a nomadic bunch, using my mom's mini van to move these massive canvases from the mostly-abandoned and half-standing school to the basements and kitchens of our amused parents. This project became a lesson in pulling together diversely talented creatives behind a singular vision. To essentially see the Big Picture.

While in Venice, Christine and I stumbled upon a great exhibit of the often misunderstood 19th century painter Henri Rousseau. In elementary school, his exotic depictions of nature fascinated me. In high school, I placed my mascot/avatar of the Flymonkey into a Rousseau-inspired oil pastel jungle. While some critics argued Rousseau’s work to be child-like, his transportive ability to bring viewers into far-off, surreal lands captured the imagination of his contemporaries and future generations.
