Rollers' Gotta Roll (Video)
One month ago, Christine and I rolled down the windows and rolled into the Outer Banks. As “ducking” has played an essential role in our inside-joke repertoire with the Farmers, we were beyond thrilled to go to a place that’s basically a big duck joke — Duck, North Carolina.
The group quickly grew to include friends, family, friends of family and family of friends to fill the traditionally expansive OBX house. Jenna, Josh, Jonas and au pair Maria completed the roll call. Newly(ish)-weds Jennilyn and Ryan, Rebecca and Chris and Christine and Tolga also rolled up.
The baker’s dozen of us drank, gamed and beached our way through a festive four-day weekend, living in a Groundhog Day’s loop of rest and relaxation. And rolling.
The mantra “Rollers’ Gotta Roll” emerged from a surprisingly tense game of Disney Trivial Pursuit (footage not found). By the end of the three-hour and four-teamed match, we discovered that the role of the dice “roller” became just as significant as the person who knows stuff. Rolling professionals Rob and Ryan defined the spirit of a "roller" — a dedicated, working-class gaming professional, who lives to play the odds and rolls to live another day.
And that weekend, we were all rollers. From making questionable umbrella investments to playing in the ocean with wedding jewelry, we all chose a life that was free of care and rich in risk.
A roller's gotta roll.
