Dinner Challenge: Cardamom’s the Word
After wine conquered all, the Furphy’s and Loizou’s reunited to continue our dinner challenge series. Starting a new round, the prompt required one couple to do everything, while the other couple put together children’s puzzles. Actually, last night’s theme was centered around surprise ingredients!
With great security, Christine and I delivered the mystery items in discrete (but clearly labeled) brown bags. One ingredient for an appetizer, three ingredients for the entrée and one ingredient for dessert. Tori and Tim had no idea what was coming.
Christine grabbed some kiwi jam from our favorite neighborhood market Each Peach, a niche store essentially designed for Dinner Challenge mystery ingredients. Quick on his feet, Tim spread the spread over sliced bread and added thinly sliced apples inspired by Bernie Sander’s hair. He dubbed the dish the Apple Kiwi Christini.
For the main dish, we brought almond oil, a watermelon radish and black-ink “squid” pasta. Having chicken on standby, Tim used what looked like Darth Vader’s spaghetti as an appropriate accompaniment. He sliced and sautéed the watermelon radish and used almond oil throughout. I’m just now naming the dish Tim’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Featuring Chicken.
Our final ingredient was simple: cardamon. The Furphy-team’s dessert specialist sprung into action with an as-planned Apple Pie — now with a pinch of the world’s third most expensive spice (thanks Wikipedia!). The concoction was drippy and delicious and can only be described as Tori’s Pie.
Tim’s home-brewed IPA was the perfect pairing for the evening (with the now vintage TnT bottles). Baby and Dog participated in the challenge — Morgan found new ways to prepare mac ’n’ cheese while very precisely providing dog food for Luna.
Next round, Christine and I do all the work!
